Kuzuryuu-Ookami and the Arakawa River

Location:

The river in front of you is the Binnuma River, which was once the main channel of the Arakawa River.

In the Mamiya area, the Arakawa River meanders heavily, with the river's flow coming from the north-east harshly turning to the south.

Rivers with greatly meandering flows are harsh on the river banks, especially when the flow increases due to heavy rain.

Even though the earth had been worn away until the river hit the roots of the tree that was next to Kuzuryuu-Ookami, the tree is said to have stood strong.

Believing that "Kuzuryuu-sama" was protecting their village and neighborhood, people began calling it "Kuzuren-sama", and venerating it also as a dental god.

This Kuzuryuu-Ookami was erected in 1900. Venerated as a water diety, protecting the area from water related issues, the diety was borrowed from the Kuzuryuu-Ookami of Nagano Prefecture's Mount Togakushi.

Even though the water levels have never risen enough to cause flood damage since the creation of the current Arakawa River, Kuzuryuu-Ookami is still watching over the neighborhood.

In recent years, with the Shingashi River floodway merging into the Binnuma river, the volume of the river has increased making it an ideal area for fishing. The area is often bustling with anglers.
