This area is Mihashi 5-chome. The hill that stretches from the Kamo River to here is known as "Tonbi Hill", and the area around it is called "Tonbigaito." The ancient road in front of the Koshin tower passes by Aoba Garden to the north, goes through Seigaiji, and continues towards Ageo and Hirakata. The road here also leads to Mizuhata Kannon to the west, crosses the Kamo River and connects to Omiya and Yono to the east. In this area you can find two monuments from the Edo period, a Koshin tower erected in February 1715 and a monument for a stone bridge erected in 1777. The Koshin tower was erected by 27 residents of Uchinoshimo Village (modern day Mihashi), and stands at a magnificent 221 cm tall. Unfortunately, the stone bridge's monument has been split down the middle. However, it has since become a signpost. On June 13, 1866, near the end of the Edo Period, peasants staged an uprising in response to the rising price of commodities and increased workloads. The uprising, started in Naguri Village, making its way to the down to this area's Jiken-ji Temple, before heading towards Omiya. On the road to Omiya, the uprisers ran into the Shogunate Director of Kanto, which resulted in the uprising's leaders being captured and the mob dispersed. This was a major event driven by the winds of reformation at the time. |
