Fukuro no Kannon-ji

Title:

Fukuro no Kannon-ji

袋の観音寺

Category:

Non-Designated Cultural Property

Location:

210-1 Nakanobayashi

This area is Nakanobayashi.

A temple of the Shingon Buddhist sect, it has long been affectionately known as “Fukuro no Kannon” after its location in the small district of Fukuro.

The principal image of this temple is of Cintāmaṇicakra Bodhisattva, long revered as a guardian deity of women. The temple has flourished as a place of prayer for safe childbirth, childrearing, and protection from illness and misfortune.

Although Kannon is associated with the 11th of each month, the temple has a special festival, the Goma Fire Ritual, on January 28th. Worshippers come not only from nearby areas, but also from Kawagoe, Iwatsuki, and even as far as Tokyo, and the grounds bustle with food stalls and visitors.

Despite being a small temple, it holds a long history that dates back to the start of the Edo Period.

Within the temple cemetery, a few stone steles from the medieval period remain as valuable historical artifacts.
