This area is Uetayahon. From around the middle of the Edo Period, elementary schools in various locations began offering classes for "reading, writing and arithmatic (using an abacus)" run in places like Temples. This was the case in 8 places in the Uemizu district. "Uetaya School" was opened in 1873, when it began providing school education in the Rinko-ji Temple. 56 boys and 14 girls were taught by two teachers. As they would attend from Uetayahon Village, Sanjomachi Village, Nakanobayashi Village and Sobagaito Village (Mihashi 4-chome), the School Bridge was built so that the children of Sobagaito Village were able to cross the Kamogawa River. The original School Bridge was located about 100 meters upstream of here and was very simple in how it crossed the river, being made with stakes struck into both sides of the banking and in the middle of the river, and with planks about 60 centimeters long. Once you crossed over to the Mihashi side, the old path continued along the embankment toward Sekinuma upstream. The second bridge was built about 50 meters upstream from this location in 1937, and the current third bridge was completed in 1990 as part of a river improvement project. It is said that the river water used to be so clear that in summer, children would jump from the bridge into the Kamogawa River and spend the whole day playing in the water. The cherry blossoms, that can be seen along the river, were planted in 1952 by local people of the area. The Kamogawa Sakura monument can be found about 100 meters upstream, along the river beside Rinko-ji Temple. |
