Description: |
The site of the estate of Kaneko Onari, provincial governor of Surugu. Kaneko Onari was a feudal lord who oversaw Onari and the Sajikawa region of the Uetaya territory (the modern-day Sajikawa neighborhood in Nishi Ward) during Japan’s medieval age (1185~1573). It is said that Kaneko turned his manor into a Zen hermitage after being converted to the Soto school of Zen Buddhism in 1426 by Gekko Shobun, a high-ranking monk who traveled throughout the Kanto region. Kaneko’s conversion is said to be the origin of the modern-day Fumonin Temple. The “mountain name” of Fumonin Temple is “Onarisan”, or, Mt. Onari. Small vestiges of the estate, such as the western riding ground, the site of a river embankment called “The Blacksmith’s Bank” (kajiya zutsumi), and the mansion’s gates are still visible outside of the temple doors. |
