Description:

   This early modern period illustration depicts a bird’s-eye-view of Iwatsuki Castle during the mid-1800s. It contains various details about the castle and its surrounding town.

The title, “Illustration of Iwatsuki Castle and the Surrounding Town of Samurai Residences,” is inscribed on the back of the image. The piece measures 288 cm tall by 272 cm wide.

This illustration serves as a fundamental historical document relating to the layout of Iwatsuki Castle and the surrounding castle town, as well as to the process of creating a map of the Iwatsuki Domain’s fortress.

The work’s style and labeled sections give it further significance as a historical document from the early modern period.
