Description: |
Kaiho Yusetsu (1598-1677) was a painter and the legitimate child of the eponymous founder of the Kaiho style of painting, Kaiho Yushu. Born in Kyoto during the early Edo period, Yusetsu was later summoned to serve the Tokugawa shogunate on the recommendation of Lady Kasuga. This set of screens depicts scenes from the “Atsumori” passage of the Heike Monogatari. The set consists of two 6-paneled screens standing 160.8 cm tall and 357.8 cm wide. The horseback figures of the warrior Kumagai Jiro no Naozane and the young samurai Taira Atsumori confront each other from their respective screens. Each is centered in the image of a fan. The opposition of Naozane to the left and Atsumori to the right, as well as the inversion of colors between the two screens, exemplify the bold designs and decorative style of the Edo period. |
