Description:

This large Tokoname-ware vessel was excavated from the Okubo-Ryoke archaeological site in Sakura Ward.

Although Tokoname pottery is a quite common type of medieval Sueki ware that is found in archaeological sites throughout the city, this piece is perhaps the only unbroken specimen of its kind.

Even with a damaged rim, the high level of craftsmanship and beauty exhibited by this piece leads us to believe that it was made in the Muromachi period (1336-1573 C.E.).

Glass kodama beads and human remains were discovered inside the pot, suggesting its final use was funerary in nature.
