Description: |
These scrolls depict key scenes from the “Taiheki”, a 40-volume epic on the upheaval of the Nanboku-cho period (1336-1392). The illustrated series has 12 scrolls in total. This work is notable for the location of its narrative text. Each illustrated scroll covers between 2-4 volumes of the “Taiheki”, with an average of 20 passages. The text does not alternate with the illustrations but is instead written in blank spaces within the image, such as in stretches of mist or the roofs of houses. It is presumed that the painter was Kaiho Yusetsu, an artist active during the early Edo period (1598-1677). |
