Description: |
“Itaishitoba” steles are flat, stone, pillar-shaped stupas used in Buddhist memorials. They are often inscribed with seed syllables (in Sanskrit, “bīja,”), Sanskrit characters representing the names of buddhas and bodhisattvas. This chlorite schist itaishitoba stele is marked with an inscription dated October 19, 1276. It features the seed symbol of Amida Buddha (Amitabha), a full moon, and a lotus seat. The stele has a height of 207.7 cm above the base, a maximum width of 50.0 cm, and a maximum thickness of 8.0 cm. |
