Description: |
This is a painting of Emperor Meiji’s imperial visit to Musashi Ichinomiya Hikawa-jinja Shrine in 1868. It stands 40.3 cm tall and 1332 cm long. A copy of the imperial edict calling for the visit is written at the start of the scroll. The painting depicts a magnificent procession of 540 people, including attendants, gunmen, musicians, and more. All are gathered around the emperor’s palanquin. This piece was recorded by Yamada Mori, a native of Kizakimura (modern Urawa Ward) who later went on to become Kawagoe Hikawa-jinja Shrine’s chief priest. Both the original copy and drafts are preserved alongside this piece. |
