Description:

This collection of 1,640 items was gathered from the region around Gyoda. It includes farming equipment of all kinds, including tools used in rice paddies, fieldwork, and cotton production.  Items such as work clothes, transportation equipment, and religious and ritual tools connected to agriculture are also featured.

By learning when, where, and by whom these items were used, we can use these farming tools as a precious source of historical insight.

The collection also shows regional differences in agricultural practices.

The collection includes tools for a direct seeding method of rice cultivation practiced on the Omiya Plateau and in the Iruma/Tokorozawa region; equipment for taremaki (a farming technique where grain, human waste, and compost are mixed and sown together), commonly practiced in the area around Osato, Kodama, and Chichibu; and materials used in northeast Saitama Prefecture’s flourishing cotton industry.
