Description: |
This painting depicts the dead on their way to the netherworld, where they are judged according to their crimes in this life. Generally, the ten judging kings are each depicted on an individual scroll, however, depictions on single scrolls are also seen after the Kamakura period (1185-1333). The painting at Takagi Jizodo Hall measures 129.5 cm in length and 181 cm in width. It depicts King Yama and the other ten kings in a single scroll. It is thought to have been created around the middle of the Edo period (1603-1867), based on customs such as the white triangular bandana worn by the dead, the tiger skins worn by demons, and the hairstyle of a child balancing stones on the riverbank of Sai no Kawara (Children’s Limbo). |
