Description: |
These costumes, props, and scripts belonged to the Ishiyamas, a family who worked for generations as kagura dance performers in Niiza City’s Nobitome village. Kagura is a broad category of folk dances with ties to the Shinto religion. The costumes and props in this collection were used in community drama and masked theater performances that took place once the kagura dance ended. The collection includes 177 costumes, 27 props, 14 set pieces, and numerous scripts. Most of the costumes are homemade and underwent repeated repair throughout their period of use. The set pieces include a pair of easy-to-carry revolving stages of differing sizes. The materials in this collection were accumulated and preserved across the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They are a testament to the region’s local performing arts culture. |
