         Description: |

“Oi” are wooden backpacks used primarily by traveling and ascetic monks to carry items such as books and tools. This is a “hako-oi”, a fully enclosed, box-style backpack. It was made during the Muromachi period (1336-1573) out of hinoki cypress wood and stands 87.5 cm tall. It is decorated with wooden carvings of camellias coated in lacquer, a construction style called “kamakurabori”. |
