Description: |
“Kakebotoke” (literally, “hanging buddhas”) are usually fashioned from round tablets featuring a hammered relief or separately-attached figure of a Buddhist or Shinto deity. This piece was made in 1488. The mirror surface is surrounded by a double rim. A seated figure of a buddha with hands pressed together in prayer is depicted in relief. The tablet is 22.2 cm in diameter, while the buddha sits 8.4 cm tall. This piece was made by the Nakabayashi family of metalworkers from the Kanaya area. |
