Description: |
Made during the start of the Edo period (1603-1868), these pieces were carved from single blocks of wood, a method known as “ichiboku-zukuri”. The figures range from 48 cm to 73 cm tall. The 12 heavenly generals are each associated with an animal of the zodiac. Each of these statues has the animal corresponding to the general it represents carved upon its head. The names of the zodiac animals are written on the back of the statues in India ink. |
