Nishi-Asuma Hikawa Jinja Shrine

Title:

Nishi-Asuma Hikawa Jinja Shrine

西遊馬・氷川神社

Category:

Non-Designated Cultural Property

Location:

235-1 Nishi-Asuma

This area is Nishi-Asuma.

The shrine, once the tutelary shrine of Nishi-Asuma, is affectionately called "Honorable Hikawa of Shuku."

This area was called "Shuku", which means post town, because of it's location between Omiya and Kawagoe. In Asuma, there were settlements on both sides of the road in front of the shrine.

The road in front of the Torii gate was an important road that connected Omiya and Kawagoe from the Edo Period onward. To the south, the route turned left at Mamiya Nursery School, joined the prefectural road, and continued via Mizuhata Kannon toward Omiya and Yono. To the north, it passed Mamiya Higashi Elementary School, and followed the bank of the Arakawa River. It then ran along the north side of Maruppori and crossed the Arakawa at the Senjudo ferry, before continuing on to Kawagoe.

As the section of the road on the north side of Maruppori has been turned into a golf course, the road can no longer be followed along it's historic path.

In the middle of July, a festival is held for Gozu Tenno at the shrine. A huge banner is erected at the gate entrance of the shrine, and the area bustles with people as a procession of Dashi (elaborate festival floats) and small Mikoshi (portable Shinto Shrine) circles through the area.
