The Aoki family served the shogunate as “ryoban” (“shoinban” (castle guards) and “koshogumi” (page corps)) from 1584 until the end of the Edo period (1603-1868). The family was given land in Musashi Province’s Adachi district and Kazusa Province’s Amaha district, which they ruled without interruption for more than 260 years,

The Aoki family home was in Edo, but Aoki Takayori established Bodaiji Temple within the family’s territory on the grounds of Shohoin Temple in Nakano Village (present-day  Minami-Nakano, Kita Ward).

Shohoin Temple has a “hokyointo” pagoda and 33 tombstones spanning from the progenitor Takayori to his distant descendant Tetsunosuke, ten generations in all. The hokyointo pagoda belonged to Masanori, a sixth-generation descendant of the family.
