Description: |
This image of the Life-Prolonging Jizo (“Emmei Jizo”) is displayed in the center of a set of the Six Jizo (Kṣitigarbha). The bodhisattva holds the ringed shakujo staff of Buddhist monks in its right hand and a round wish-fulfilling jewel in its left. It is 55 cm tall. The tablet showing the bodhisattva’s halo and the lotus-shaped support is carved from a single 92 cm-tall piece of stone. Based on the inscriptions on either side of the pointed halo, this sculpture was erected in 1647 by the believers of Suna village with the hope that it would bring them peace even in the afterlife. This well-preserved statue is a good resource for learning about the religious practices surrounding the bodhisattva Jizo during the early Edo period. |
